A Guide to Window Film Options and Regulatory Compliance

Window films offer a versatile and cost-effective way to enhance office spaces with glass partitioning. This guide explores their key benefits and the relevant UK regulations for their use in workplace environments.

Key Benefits of Window Films

Enhanced Privacy

Frosted window films provide an effective solution for maintaining privacy within office spaces. They allow light to flow through while creating discreet areas for meetings & workstations, without compromising the open-plan aesthetic.

Safety Compliance

Window films help meet workplace safety regulations by clearly marking glass partitions to prevent collisions. They also provide a cost-effective alternative to replacing glazing, ensuring compliance with safety standards for your office.

Visual Impact

Modern printing methods allow for complex designs & colours, including logos and graphics, to be used in manifestation films. This can instantly elevate the look of your office, complementing your office interior design for that “wow” factor.

Practical Installation

Window films are quick and easy to install, making them a practical, low-cost way to enhance your office. We can easily replace them, providing a simple update to your office environment without the need for new glass partitioning.

Privacy Solutions

Frosted window films are a popular solution for maintaining privacy while preserving the benefits of glass partitioning. These films:

  • Allow natural light to flow through the office
  • Provide discreet meeting spaces without solid walls
  • Maintain a contemporary, open-office aesthetic
  • Come in varying levels of opacity based on privacy needs
  • Use precise laser cutting for endless design possibilities

We can apply partial frosting to specific sections of glass partitioning to balance privacy and openness, offering flexibility to meet different workplace requirements.

Compliance with UK Regulations

At Rodley Interiors, we handle all compliance requirements for the window films we install, ensuring your office meets all necessary safety & accessibility regulations. In the UK, window films must comply with specific regulations:

Protection from Falling, Collision, and Impact (Schedule 1, Part K: Building Regulations 2010 🔗)

This section of the UK Building Regulations focuses on keeping people safe from accidents involving glass in buildings. In simple terms, it requires that large glass panels or doors must be clearly marked so people can see them. Without proper markings, people might walk into transparent glass surfaces, risking injury. This is particularly important in busy office environments where glass partitioning and doors are standard features.

Workplace (Health, Safety, and Welfare) Regulations 1992

Regulation 14 mandates that all glass surfaces be made of safety material or be protected against breakage and clearly marked to prevent accidental collisions. We can install window films to older glass partitions to ensure your office is compliant with Health & Safety.

Manifestation Requirements (Section K5.2, Approved Document K: Building Regulations 2010 🔗)

To prevent accidental collisions, glazing in critical locations must be marked at two levels: between 850mm and 1000mm and between 1400mm and 1600mm above the ground. The manifestation should contrast visually with the background in all lighting conditions, making it visible from both sides of the glass. It must take the form of either a logo or sign (minimum 150mm high) or a decorative feature such as a continuous band or broken lines (minimum 50mm high). For glass doors and screens, the manifestation should also include high-contrast strips at the top and on both sides of the glass.

note

Note: Manifestation requirements were previously covered by Part N (Glazing), with related accessibility guidance in Part M (Access to and use of buildings). Both were consolidated into Approved Document K in 2013 in England; Part N still applies in Wales.

Style and Design Opportunities

Window films offer endless design possibilities beyond just fulfilling safety requirements.  Rather than a monotonous row of frosted dots, modern printing technology allows for:

  • Computer-controlled laser cutting for precise logo application
  • Full-colour printed designs at photo quality
  • Custom patterns, artwork, and corporate branding elements
  • Displaying information such as room numbers or motivational quotes

Window films can also be used creatively to add blocks or bands of colour that enhance your office’s interior design. By incorporating colour strategically, you can divide spaces, highlight specific areas, or create visual focal points, all while maintaining an open and airy atmosphere.

When applied to full-height glass partitions, these custom window films can become an impressive feature, transforming otherwise plain glass into a focal point of your office design. Whether you’re aiming for a minimalistic style or a more vibrant, energetic atmosphere, window films offer the ideal solution to balance safety with design.
